Docket Fo. 50-482:

Change in Asiatic Clam Monitoring Program Gentlemen:

i Reference 1 provided Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation's (WCNOC) initial response to Generic Letter 89-13,

" Service Water System Problems Af fecting Safety-Related Equipment. "

In this response WCNOC indicated that annual substrate sampling was being performed to monitor Asiatic clam movement on the Neosho River toward the Wolf Creek Cooling Lake, prior to establishment 2

of a clam population in the lake.

WCNOC further committed to employ larval sampling should an Asiatic clam population establish itself in the lake.

i Reference 2 provided WCNOC's updated response to Generic Letter 89-13.

This response provided additional information resulting from a functional self assessment performed on the WCGS service water systems.

In. this response WCNOC indicated that Asiatic clams had been discovered in the Wolf Creek Cooling Lake in June of 1991.

Reference 2 also indicated that monitoring clam movement on the Neosho River would be discontinued, because the clams had populated the lake.

However, substrate sampling in the lake, and larval sampling initiated following the discovery of the clams in the lake, would be continued.

In addition, Reference 2 indicated that larval sampling would be discontinued once spawning characteristics were identified, in accordance with the guidance provided in Generic Letter 89-13.

ET 97-0035 Page 2 of 2 Reference 3 provided WCNOC's final response to Generic Letter 89-13, which fulfilled the Generic Letter's reporting requirement to confirm, in writing, within 30 days of completion, that all initial tests and activities associated j

with Generic Letter 89-13 were completed and cc.ntinuing programs established.

The purpose of this letter is to inform the NRC that, based on the detection of Asiatic clams in Wolf Creek Lake, WCNOC has discontinued larval and adult sampling, in accordance with Generic Letter 89-13.

Lake monitoring has identified that peak spawning activity occurs in late spring and early fall.

)

Chemical treatments for Asiatic clams are scheduled to coincide with expected spawning cycles, and are controlled in accordance with site procedures.
