Dear Mr. Denton:
Section 3.6.2.3 of the Environmental Report - Operating License stage describes the startup and equipment cleaning operations planned at the Vogtle j
Electric Generating Plant.
As designed, chemical cleaning wastes are discharged to a three million gallon lined startup pond while the five million gallon unlined startup pond receives discharges fmm system water flushings.
The Unit 1 chemical cleaning program has recently been completed. During that cleaning pmgram, it became apparent that to keep the cleaning pmgram on schedule, greater capacity to store chemical cleaning wastes was needed, t
-Therefore, as an improvement to the existing treatment facilities, a second l
lined startup pond was installed imediately adjacent to the first lined pond t
on September 20, 1985.
This pond has a 4.8 million gallon capacity and has a 80 mil thick i
j high-density polyethylene liner.
This is the same material as is in the first lined startup pond.
Attached is a schematic showing the location of the second lined pond in relation to the other ponds and plant structures. The pond is located in an area that was previously utilized during site l
construction. Thus, no addditional clearing was required for construction of this facility.
