SUBJECT:

REVIEW 0F IMPELL TOPICAL REPORT ON 61 TRAK SYSTEM We have under review the enclosed proprietary topical report submitted by the Impell Corporation on the 61 TRAK isotope behavior analysis computer program.

61 TRAK is described as a tool that operators of nuclear power plants can use to demonstrate compliance with the waste classification requirements of 10 CFR 1

Part 61. Based on reactor coolant isotopic data, the model uses a set of 1-empirical equations to estimate release of fission products into the coolant.

The 61 TRAK model then determines scaling factors between gama-emitting and non-gama-emitting radionuclides (e.g., Tc-99 and Cs-137), and tracks these scaling factors through various plant systems and waste streams.

l We have formed a preliminary determination of the acceptability of the 61 TRAK system for demonstrating compliance with the Part 61 requirements, and have j

drafted the enclosed response to Impell. Nonetheless, we recognize that many f

of the technical issues raised by the topical report are in your area of expertise. We would therefore appreciate your brief review of the topical report. We would also appreciate input from you regarding the need for addressing any additional points in our response to Impell.

4 Thank you for your assistance. We hope to finalize our response to Impell by the first week in December. The WM staff contact is Mr. G. W. Roles (74791).
