Mr. James G. Keppler Regional Administrator 6 d- ~C-N Region III S&-

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This special report is being submitted in accordance with Technical Specifi-cation 3.7.7.a.

A temporary thermocouple near some Unit 2 Safety Relief Valve solenoids measured an ambient air temperature between 150 degrees F and 155 degrees F between September 30, 1984, and December 2, 1984. Technical Specification 3.7.T.a.

Area Temperature Monitoring, requires a special report if a temperature of 150 degrees F is exceeded.

A review of our records indicated that no special report was forwarded for this event. However, all data required during this period was taken in accord-ance with the Unit 2 dryvell temperature monitoring plan and forwarded to off-site engineering for use in calculation of equipment qualified lifetimes.

The high temperature was corrected by the last of several adjustments in dryvell air flow performed over the entire period. The reporting requirements are being clarified and formalized to insure that no further high temperature conditions go unreported.

An analysis of the NUREG 0588 Category II qualified life of the Safety Relief Valve Solenoids shows that as of August 28, 1985, the solengida still have almost 16 years, if the temperatures at the solenoids remain at the temperature currently existing.
