Dear Mr. Oravetz:

JPartlow BGrimes EJordan

Thank you for your letter of July 24 regarding our assessment of the poten-l tial impact of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant on the shortnose sturgeon, i

Acipenser brevirostrum, in the Savannah River. The Department of Energy has announced that it is preparing an environmental impact statement on cooling water systems at the Savannah River Plant. The apprehension which you expressed to NRC regarding thermal discharges in the Savannah River might be dispelled by your active participation in the DOE process. You should correspond directly to Mr. R. P. Whitfield, Director, Environmental Division, U.S. Department of Energy, Savannah River Operations Office, P. O. Box A, Aiken, South Carolina 29802. Mr. Whitfield can be reached by telephone at FTS 239-3957.

We have discussed your interest with Mr. Whitfield and have provided him with a copy of your July 24 letter to us. Although we will be pleased to make information available from'our own environmental review, I believe that you should be able to accomplish more by working directly with DOE.

. Sincerely, Elinor G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation i
