LASALLE COUNTY NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION N.P.D.E.S. pBRMIT NO:

ILOO48151 NONCOMPLIANCE REPORT DISCHARGE NUMBER AND DESCRIPTION: 001(a) Demineralizer Regenerant Wastes PARAMETER AND PERMIT LIMIT:

Total Suspended Solids 15 ppm 30-day average.

NONCOMPLIANCE. DATE. AND DURATION:

39 ppe Total Suspended Solids. 31 Oct 85. 30-day average CAUSE OF NONCOMPLIANCE:

The 30-day average limit was exceeded because of one discharge which contained 39 ppe total suspended solids.

(This occurrence was reported in a noncompliance report submitted 15 Oct 85). A grab sample collected prior to discharge indicated the tank met NPDES discharge limits.

It was suspected that solids from low flowrate (< 100 GPM) discharges to the j

Wastewater Treatment System accumulated in the lowpoint of the discharge piping and that higher flowrate (> 500 GPM) discharges to the cooling lake dislodges the accumulated solids, thus creating a solids excursion.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Investigation into the problem concluded that discharges to the lake will be done only at a low flowrate (< 100 GPM). A caution card was hung on crosstie valve OWM213 to ensure this.

The standstill acid sump will be cleaned. Also, any solids on the floor in areas which drain to the acid sump will be cleaned.

DATE RECOGNIZED AS A VIOLATION:
