SUBJECT:

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Main Condenser Of fgas System REFERENCE :

License Amendment Application dated May 23, 1985

Dear Mr. Muller:

This letter responds to the NRC request for additional information regarding the design of the new offgas system installed on Peach Bottom Unit 2.

The request was received in a telecon from the NRR Project Manager and was prompted by the NRC's review of the referenced application.

The application would revise the Limiting Condition for Operation for the hydrogen concentration in the offgas system and associated hydrogen analyzers, based on the design of the new offgas system.

Specifically, the NRC requested confirmation as to the hydrogen detonation resistance of the new offgas system.

All portions of the Unit 2 main condenser offgas system are designed to withstand the effects of a hydrogen detonation without breach of the pressure boundary.

Piping and components in the offgas stream have been analyzed in accordance with the methodology described in Appendix C of ANSI /ANS-55.4-1979.

This methodology has been demonstrated to be conservative by theoretical analysis and operating experience.

The offgas system pl.anned for Unit 3 will satisfy the same standard.
