Attention:
Mr. Walter Butler, Chief
-Licensing Branch 2 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:
SER OUTSTANDING ISSUE 1 "RIVERBORNE MISSILES" HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) hereby submits their response to Outstanding Issue 1 "Riverborne Missiles" as presented in the liope Creek Safety Evaluation Report (SER).
This issue was discussed via telecon between Messrs.
'J. Ridgely and D. Wagner of the NRC and Messr. B.A. Preston of PSE&G on September 12, 1985.
The purpose of the discussion was focused on demonstrating that a floating missile strike upon the Service Water Intake Structure (SWIS) concurrent with a Probable Maximum !!urricane (PMii) with maximum wave run-up would not compromise the integrity of the Service Water Pump (SWP) shaft seal and/or flange seal with respect to : leakage.
In this regard, PSE&G has evaluated the impact of the most limiting credible floating missile (i.e.,
25 kip pleasure-craf t) and has ~ determined that the integrity of the Service Water Pump shaft seal and flange seal will not be compromised.
This determination.is based upon the fact that the pumps have been initially qualified to withstand the response resulting from the Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE).
A comparison of this response'to that resulting from the floating missile impact has been performed.
The comparison reveals that the SWPs have the capacity to withstand the dynamic response resulting from floating missile impact.
