Dear Sir:

In accordance with the requirments of Title 10, Chapter 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 21, Transamerica Delaval Inc. hereby notifies the Comnission of a potential defect in a component of a DSRV Standby Diesel Generator. There could exist a potential pro-blem with the on-engine Jacket Water Pump Impeller.

Transamerica Delaval has supplied this component with the potential problem to the following nuclear site:

Utility Site Serial No.

Model Georgia Pomr Vogtle 76021/24 DSRV-16-4 At Georgia Power Vogtle plant, the impeller from the on-engine jacket water pump was found to have not been retained properly on its shaft. During a recent test start up, the impeller came loose, causing damage to the pump volute.

The impeller is manufactured by Transamerica Delaval. Upon investi-gation of this problem, we found that during the manufacturing process of one lot, a mmrk was performed on three (3) impeller pieces.

The design of this rework was such that the impeller was no longer properly retained in its position. All three of these impellers have been fand at the Georgia Power Vogtle Plant.

This rework was used only on this one job and is not a standard pro-cedure.

Failure of this pump will cause a loss of cooling water to the engine, effecting engine availability.

Transanurica Delaval recomnends these impellers be replaced inmediately.

This activity is now in process at the Georgia Power Vogtle Plant.

Since action is required by others, we cannot estimate when the cor-rective action will be completed.

A copy of this letter will be forwarded to Georgia Power Company, hf) s 1 0 L
