Dear Mr. Denton:
i In the referenced letter a justification was offered for not meeting all the requirements of the accumulator tank level and pressure instrumentation, item 3.3.4.
Plant Vogtle has reevaluated the need to designate accumulator tank pressure as a Category 2 Type D variable. Based upon the evaluation, Plant Vogtle has upgraded the pressure transmitter to a fully environmentally and seismically qualified status that is powered by the balance of plant uninterruptable power source (UPS).
As discussed in the referenced letter, the range of the accumulator tank pressure transmitter (700 psig) is adequate to monitor any expected pressure in the accumulator. The maximum ' pressure allowed by plant Technical Specifications is 637 psig. The two series check valves in the discharge line from each accumulator prevent fluid addition to the tank. The re. fore, there is no need to extend the pressure 12dication beyond the present 700 psi _g range.
i The accumulator tank leval will be maintained as a Category 3 Type D variable. The level transmitters are only'used for technical specification surveillance. The plant Technical Specifications require that the contents of the tank be maintained within a very narrow range (6616 to 6854 gallons). The instrumentation provided monitors the level of the tank for a span of 14 inches in which normal level is maintained.
