Subject:

IE Bulletin 85-01 Steam Binding of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps R.

E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Murley:

This letter is in response to USNRC IE Bulletin 85-01, Steam Binding of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps.

Prior to this IE Bulletin, and subsequent to receipt of USNRC IE Information Notice 84-06 and INPO Significant Operating Experience Report No. 84-03, procedures were implemented to monitor fluid conditions in the Auxiliary Feedwater Systems at Ginna Station.

Effective October 23, 1984, Procedure O-6,

" Operations and Process Monitoring", was changed to include monitoring the temperaturelof the Auxiliary Feedwater and Standby Auxiliary Feedwa ter Systems at least once per shift to detect any back -

leakage.

This is accomplished by touching the discharge piping and pump casing.

This procedure also directs the operators to vent the casing and operate the affected pump if back leakage is

-evident.

Training on these changes was accomplished by reading and acknowledgment.

Effective July 6, 1984, steps were added to Procedure PT-16,

" Auxiliary Feedwa ter Pump Flow Check", and PT-36, "S ta ndby Auxiliary Feedwater Pump Flow Check", to verify that the discharge piping of the pumps are at ambient temperature af ter testing is completed.

The informa tion of these p'rocedures satisfies the require-ments of IE Bulletin 85-01.

The procedures will remain in effect until resolution of Generic Issue 93 or a hardware modification reduces the possibility of steam binding.
