Vogtle Electric Generating Plant-Units 1 and 2; 50-424, 50-425; Turbine Building Seismic Analysis Attention: Mr. J. Nelson Grace On June 24, 1985, Georgia Power Company's Mr.

C.

W.

Hayes reported a potential deficiency to Mr. W. H. Rankin of the USNRC-Region II concerning the seismic design calculations for the turbine building and turbine pedestal.

Further investigation and definition of the problem has determined that the potentially reportable condition actually concerns the turbine building seismic analysis involved in the determination of the width of the gap between the turbine building and the turbine generator concrete pedestal for both Units 1 and 2, and the gap between the Unit 1 and 2 structural frames.

In subsequent correspondence to the NRC, Georgia Power Company indicated the NRC would be informed of the results of the evaluation of this condition by November 15, 1985.

Georgia Power Company has reviewed the results of the engineering evaluation of this condition.

The evaluation, performed by Southern Company Services, concluded that the turbine building, subjected to the loads associated with the postulated design basis seismic event, with the existing gap conditions, meets all the design criteria stated in the Final Safety Analysis Report and, as a result, there would be no impact to the safe operation of nearby structures.

Therefore Georgia Power Company has concluded that this concern is not reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55 (e) or 10 CFR 21.

This response contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
