Washington, D.C.

Dear Congressman Mascara:

I am responding to your letter to me dated February 27, 1997, raanasting that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff attend a public morting to be held by public officials and residents of Canton Township, Penns;c,ania, to discuss the permit application process, the role of the NRC, and the type of low-level radioactive waste that is being addressed at the Molycorp site in Washington, Pennsylvania.

We agree that it is important for all interested parties to learn first-hand the status of current and proposed NRC-licensed activities at the site. The staff currently is coordinating with the Townshi; fupervisors and the licensee to schedule such a meeting and will provide a staff representative to participate in the meeting. We will inform your staff of the meeting date and location after the arrangements have been made.

If I can be of further assistance, please contact me or Dennis K. Rathbun, Director, Office of j

Congressional Affairs, at (301) 415-1776.

Sincerely,

~
