Dear Dr. Travers:
Tnree Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)
Operatin0 License No. OPR-73 l
Docket No. 50-320 Defueling Hydraulic Systen Fluid Testing GPU Nuclear letter 4410-85-L-0215, dated October 29, 1985, provided tne results of testing performed on various fluids being considered for use in the defueling hydraulic system.
In that letter, GPU Nuclear noted that two fluids (Borate tister/UCON WS-34 mixture and UCON WS-34/ doric Acid mixture) were acceptable; however, the UCON WS-34/ Boric Acid mixture would be used based on availability.
Since initiating defueling activities, problems have Deen encountered with the UCON WS-34/80ric Acid mixture. Although Doron concentration remained above the required 4350 ppm, precipitation of boric acid crystals has occurred. To preclude further deterioration of the hydraulic fluid in the system and potential adverse effects on the defueling tooling, GPU Nuclear intends to drain and flesh the hydraulic system and replace the WS-34/ Boric Acid mixture with the UCON WS-34/dorate Ester mixture. The replacement fluid will be a 75/25 UCON WS-34/dorate Ester volumetric ratio as described in the referenced
