FIRE PROTECTION - CHANGES TO ALTERNATE SHUTDOWN METHOD By letter dated December 5, 1985, Consumers Power Company notified the NRC (1) that several minor changes had been made to the alternate shutdown method as described in the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) dated March 8, 1983; (2) that an evaluation of those changes had been performed and the conclusion derived from that evaluation was that the changes are in conformance to 10CFR50.48 and Appendix R and that they do not decrease the ability to safely shut down the plant by alternate methods; and (3), a letter describing those minor changes would be submitted in the near future. Those minor changes are described in the following paragraphs.

The SER dated March 8, 1983 states that plug-in connectors will be used with temporary cables to provide alternate power to Control Rod Drive (CRD) pump No. I and to the CRD booster pump. The actual installation involved permanentt. 3 wiring the alternate power source to CRD pump No. 1 in an arrangement that allows CRD pump No. I to be powered from the alternate power source by the operation of two switches and one disconnect. The permanent installation complies with the separation criteria of Appendix R and requires 1ers time to be made operational than would the previously planned temporary wiring.

The SER also states that the CRD booster pump is required for safe shutdown.

The CRD booster pump is desired but not required for safe shutdown. Temporary wiring in the form of a cable which is permanently connected and switchable to the alternate power source is available. The other end of that cable must be bolted to connectors attached to the booster pump. This arrangement is 8601210162 860113 PDR ADOCM 05000155 Li 0 F PDR t OC0186-0002-NLO4

'different than the SER description which states that temporary wiring or cable can-be plugged into the connectors attached to the booster. pump. In consider-ation of the facts that the booster pump is no longer considered essential-for

-safe shutdown and, if it were, would not be required for at least nine hours,

-this type of connection.is considered adequate.
