l The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), as part of its responsibility of regulating nuclear power plants, periodically' evaluates the performance of its licensees through a program called the Systematic Assessment of Licensee

! Performance (SALP). Through this program, we review and evaluate our licensees' performance in the four major categories of: Plant Operations,

! Maintenance. Engineering, and Plant Support. The Plant Support category l includes an assessment of licensee performance with regard to emergency preparedness.

On April 22, 1997, representatives of the NRC will meet with the management of the Georgia Power Company to discuss the Hatch Nuclear Power Plant's performance over the past 21 months. You are invited to attend this meeting as an observer.

Subsequent to this meeting, we have scheduled time to meet with you, and other members of your staff as you deem appropriate, to discuss matters of mutual l interest with regard to the regulation and performance of Hatch.

This SALP meeting is scheduled to be conducted at 10:00 a.m. in the Simulator Building. Emergency Operating Facility Assembly Room, at the site. The  ;

proposed meeting with you and other local and' State officials will be l conducted in the Simulator Building, shortly after the conclusion of the SALP.  !
