Dear Mr. Basinger:
l This letter is to confirm our telephone conversations on March 18 and 19,1997, regarding the l Sr-90 leaking sources in the model 60-01-DS gauge. Based on our conversations, our i understanding is that:
1 I 1. The Hauni Richmond model H1347 gauge is not manually calibrated.
- 2. Hauni Richmond agrees that the model NSRB-14DS gauge functions the same as the .
l model 60-01-DS gauge with regard to source movement and calibration, therefore should l l be included in this analysis. Hauni Richmond believes that none of these are currently in active use, but that some may still be possessed by licensees.
- 3. For models 60-01-DS and NSRB-14DS, there is at least a 1 millimeter gap between the shutter and the source face, therefore the direct wipe testing of the device would not be a ;
l contributing factor to the wear / damage issue.
- 4. To the best of Hauni Richmond's knowledge, only R.J. Reynolds (RJR) was doing the manual calibration, but licensees other than RJR were doing the direct wipe test. l 1
l 5. Hauni Richmond has already spoken with their customers using the model 30-01-DS to inform them that the manual calibration is NOT to be performed, and to instruct them to remove the users manual page that gives the manual calibration procedures. Hauni Richmond will also amend any necessary pages in the users manual to remove references that direct the user to perform the manual calibration procedures. Hauni Richmond will j provide the NRC copies of the changes to the users manual to the NRC to be placed in the l l registration certificate files of both the model 60-01-DS and the model NSRB-14DS gauges.

- 6. Hauni Richmond will send a letter to all persons in the U.S. that have been shipped the
- model 60-01-DS and/or model NSRB-14DS gauges informing them that the manual
! calibration is NOT to be performed and providing the changes to the users manual. Hauni Richmond will provide the NRC a copy of the letter and a listing of allletter recipients.
Hauni Richmond has indicated that they will also provide an estimate of the total number of U.S. users of cigarette density gauges.
- 7. Hauni Richmond agrees that the NRC will amend the registration certificates of both the model 60-01-DS and the model NSRB-14DS devices to include a Reviewer Note informing
- license reviewers that the manual calibration is not to be performed on these devices.

- 8. Hauni Richmond will forward to the NRC a copy of the Amersham (Germany) source analysis when it is completed. At the time of our conversation, the analysis hed not been started.
Please provide the requested information within 20 (twenty) days of the date of this letter.
If you are unable to provide complete information within 20 (twenty) days, please provide an interim report containing as much information as available and indicate the schedule for 1 providing the complete information.
