License SNM-1270, Docket 70-1220
Dear Mr. Chappell:
On April 30,1997, License SNM-1270 expires. Accordingly, the General Electric Company requests that the license be renewed. The renewal of this license will permit General Electric to act as the shipp.r of developmental fuel rods and hardware components from reactor power stations in support of various -
l research and development programs that contribute significantly to the improved safety and reliability of:
the nuclear power industry.
The programs include the retrieval ofirradiated fuel segments from reactor sites and shipment to the Vallecitos Nuclear Center (VNC) for hot cell post-irradiation examination. Ilardware items include fuel bundle non-fissile components, B C tubes, control blade segments, vessel surveille.nce samples, and 4
. various pipe samples.
All of the past shipments have been completed safely and without incident. As required by License SNM-1270, all shipments are limited to items involved with research and development programs.
Without License SNM-1270, many of these programs would have to be terminated.
It is understood that the General Electric Company will be billed for this renewal at the full cost of the review.
Sincerely, H. M. Murray b
