NOVEMBER

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE ' UNIT 1 The unit entered the reporting period at a power level of 810 MWe (78% reactor power). On December 4th at 0348 hours, the unit was taken off line for turbine balancing. On December 6th at 0100 hours, the reactor tripped while in hot stendby, due to "0" shift on steam flow channels in coincidence with 25% steam generator level. On December 7th at 0630 hours the unit was made critical and on December 8th at 1104 hours the unit was synchronized to the gird. The unit remained on line the remair. der of the report period, ending at a power level of 1053 MWe (99% reactor power) having and availability factor of 86.1% and a capacity factor of 78.1%. Unit 2 The unit entered the report period shutdown for the continuation of Cycle VIII-IX refueling outage. The unit remained shutdown for the entire report period. 1052t 0505A L

REFUELING INFORMATION REQUEST Questions: 1. Name of facility. 2. Scheduled date for next refueling shutdown. 3. Scheduled date for restart following refueling. 4. Will refueling or resumption of operation thereaf ter require a technical specification change or other license amendment? If answer is yes, what, in general, will these be? If answer is no, has the reload fuel design and core configuration been reviewed by your Plant Safety Review Committee to determine whether any unreviewed safety questions are associated with the core reload (Ref. 10 CFR Section 50.59)? If no such review has taken place, when is it scheduled? 5. Scheduled date (s) for submitting proposed licensing action and supporting information. 6. Important licensing considerat - s associated with refueling, e.g., new or different fuel des gn or supplier, unreviewed design or performance analysis methods, significant changes in fuel design, new operating procedures. 7. The number of fuel assemblies (a) in the core and (b) in the spent fuel storage pool. 8. The present licensed spent fuel pool storage capacity and the size of any increase in licensed storage capacity that has been requested or is planned, in number of fuel assemblies. 9. The projected date of the last refueling that can be discharged to the spent fuel pool assuming the present licensed capacity. s ? age 1 of 3 1052t 0505A

!! nit 1 - Answers l 1. Zion Unit 1 l 2. June 26, 1986,is the scheduled date for the next refueling outage. 3. October 23, 1986 is the scheduled date for initial criticality following refueling. 4. A reload safety evaluation review will take place March 31, 1986 and may identify any unreviewed safety questions. The receipt of new fuel for the next Unit 1 refueling will require a Technical Specification change to allow on-site storage of fuel enriched up to 3.7 w/o U-235. 5. Changes have been submitted. 6. None 7. The number of fuel assemblies a) in the core is 193, and b) in the spent fuel storage pool which have been discharged by Zion Unit 1 is 497. 8. The present licensed spent fuel pool storage capacity (shared with Zion Unit 2) is 2112 fuel assemblies. The installation of the new storage racks has been completed. S. In 1995, Zion Station will !ose full core discharge capability. This date is based on a December, 1983 study. Page 2 of 3 1052t 0505A

Unit 2 - Answers 1. Zion Unit 2 2. The Unit shutdown on September 6,1985 for the current refueling outage. 3. January 14, 1986 is the scheduled date for initial criticality after refueling. 4. The January, 1986 startup will require two Technical Specifications to be approved; they are for RCFC damper removal and the reactor vessel specimen capsule withdrawal schedule. 5. Changes have been submitted. 6. None. 7. The number of fuel assemblies a) in the core is 193, and b) in the spent fuel storage pool which have been discharged by Zion Unit 2 is 511. 8. The present licensed spent fuel pool storage capacity (shared with Zion Unit 1) is 2112 fuel assemblies. The installation of the new storage racks has been completed. 9. In 1995, Zion Station will lose full core discharge capability. This date is based on a December, 1983 study. Page 3 of 3 1052t 0505A
