SUBJECT:
MINUTES OF THE NRC/IDCOR MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 26, 1985 i
l On September 26, 1985, representatives from the NRC staff and IDCOR met to discuss the treatment of uncertainties in the analysis of severe accident risk. The purpose of the meeting was to provide guidance on the 4
uses of uncertainty analysis, brief IDCOR on NRC programs related to uncertainty analysis and provide them with connents on the uncertainty j
analyses they have performed to date.
i l
Following introductory remarks by Z. P.osztoczy of NRC and A. Buhl of IDCOR, Z. Rosztoczy described NRC's, view of the uses of uncertainties.'
Uncertainties in deterministic evaluations will be used in comparing the j
relative merits of alternative plant improvements, while uncertainties in probabilistic evaluations will be used for comparison with the safety j
goals, comparisons of differing risk calculations (IDCOR vs. SARP),
searching for plant vulnerabilities and prioritizing future efforts, i

)
J. Murphy of RES summarized the NRC programs on the assessment of uncer-j tainties.
In the near term, this consists mainly of the analyses for
]
input to NUREG-1150.
In the' longer term, the office of:research will complete separate analyses of uncertainties in containment response and j
fission product behavior, and an integrated uncertainty assessment with the MELCOR code _ package.

containment response and fission product behavior, and J. Carter of Energex briefly described the uncertainties'in consequence modelling.
R. Barrett of NRC summarized the NRC staff review of the IDCOR uncer-tainty analysis and outlined areas where the proposed IDCOR uncertainty initiative should focus effort.
