1 NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g, ,p WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 January 6, 1986 Docket No. 99901015/85-01 Exosensors, Inc.

ATTN: Mr. Don Stevens President 1220-8 Simon Circle Anahiem, California Gentlemen:

Thank you for your letter of November 18, 1985, in response to our letter dated August 26, 1985. As a result of our review, we find that additional information is needed. Specifically, your response did not address Nonconformances B.6.b, B.8.b, B.9.a, and your response to Nonconformance B.2.a is unacceptable. Comments on your response and clarifications to the Nonconformances, as well as requests for additional information or corrective action are detailed below.

1. Your response to Nonconformance B.2.a is not acceptable. In addition to providing a record of shop operations and inspections, shop travelers also serve as work instructions to the production personnel and inspectors. The shop travelers specify which manufacturing operations are required, what sequence they are to be performed in, what procedures are to be used, what inspections are required, and what inspection or test procedures are to be used. As such, revisions to shop travelers must be controlled.

If Exosensors has some other documented means of providing work instructions to the production and inspection personnel, then the shop travelers could only serve as documentation of the as-built condition and revisions to them would not be required to be controlled.

Please submit additional corrective action on this item.

2. The following comments are offered on your response to Nonconformance B.3.

B.3.a If your QA Manual is going to be this general, a procedure is necessary to describe what Exosensors will actually do, and under what circumstances each alternative will be used.

B.3.b Although your actions provided assurance that Exosensors procurement requirements were met, the requirement to have the supplier on the Approved Supplier List prior to issuing the order is imposed by Paragraph 4.4 of the QA Manual.

4. Your response does not address Nonconformance B.8.b; how nonconformances discovered as a result of Quality Surveys or Questionnaires are documented and tracked.

Please submit additional corrective action on this item.

5. Your response does not address Nonconformance B.9.a, how corrective action is achieved and documented for nonconformances discovered as a result of Quality Surveys or Questionnaires.

Please submit additional corrective action on this item.

Please provide the additional information or corrective action within 25 days of the date of this letter.

Those responses for which no additional information or corrective action is requested should be considered acceptable.

Sincerely, I

edin w-Gary G. Zech, Chief Vendor Program Branch Division of Quality Assurance, Vendor and Technical Training Center Programs Office of Inspection and Enforcement
