ORMATIONCONCERNINGGROUPING3MO RESPONSE STATUS FOR PROPOSED NATIONAL PR.

ITIES LIST

,.Thq Proposed National Priorities List includes 418 sites.

It is compiled in groups of 50 with' Group 1 sites ranked highest priority and Group 9 sites ranked lowest priority.

(Group 9 contains only 18 sites.)

Sites are not numbered 1 through 418 in priority because this could mislead the public into thinking that EPA's Hazard Ranking System can ' bake such fine distinctions and that EPA will take actions in the exact order of the list.

Sites are listed in order of score except that 26 sites had to be inserted into the top 100 to meet CERCLA requirements regarding States' top priorities.

The Response Status for each site is sp~ecified as follows:

R - Some Federal or State funding has already been designated to commence removal or remedial cctions under CERCLA.

V - A voluntary agreement exists whereby a company has consented to commence response actions.

E - A Federal or State court has mandated some form of non-consentual remedial action following a judicial proceeding.

D - Actions are yet to be determined.

F. B. DAHLINGER. Secretary 30 SENNETT AVENUE RoCHELLE PARK. NEW JER$fY 07662 PLANNING BOARD January 3, 1983 Ms Ann M. Gorsuch, Administrator Environmental Protection Agency 401 M. Street S.w Washington, D.C. 20460 Re: Hazardous Waste Site - Rochelle Park, N.J.

Dear Ms Gorsuch:

We understand that your agency has published a Proposed Priority List cleaning up of hazardous waste sites and that one of the sites listed was Maywood/Rochelle Park, New Jersey (Stephen Chemical Co.) site which was found to be contaminated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

We wish to~make known our concern for the health of Rochelle Fark residents who live adjacent to the contaminated site. We call your attention to NRC reports 40-8610/80-1; 40-8610/80-02 and 40-8610/80-03, also the final report of Oak Ridge Associated Universities dated July 30, 1981. These documents cite the contam-ination found on inspections and investigations in our Township.

We have been advised that before your agency releases a final list for Hazardous Waste Site Clearance, that public comments have been requested.

We hereby, on behalf of the residents of Rochelle Park request that your agency give top priority to the clearing of con-tamination from Rochelle Park. We feel that there is enough doc-umented reports showing the contamination and the history of the site establishing responsibility for the contamination. The health hazard to the people is clearly apparent and therefore should be given priority consideration for clearing of the site.

We respectfully urge that the contaminated site be cleared as soo'n as possible.

Very truly yours, cc: Rochelle Park Township Committee
