c/o Three Mile Island Nuclear Station u

Middletown, PA 17057 O

Dear Dr. Travers:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Groundwater Monitoring The following is a periodic report of the results of the groundwater monitoring program which is conducted to detect the leakage of radioactive water to the groundwater in the vicinity of TMI-2.

GROUNDWATER MONITORING The following groundwater monitoring data is attached:

1.

Individual computer graphs (Figure 1) of tritium concentrations for monitoring stations, observation stations, and the East Dike Catch Basin (EDCB) up to and including September 3, 1985 2.

Individual computer graphs (Figure 2) of the water levels within the monitoring stations.

3.

A graph (Figure 3) indicating the gamma scan data from monitoring station MS-2 sample analyses up to and including S

0n September 5, 1985.

GPU Nuclear Corporation is a subsidiary of the General Public Utilities Corporation

Dr. Travers January 3, 1986 4410-85-L-0250 4.

A composite drawing which depicts all monitoring locations with a corresponding graph of the tritium concentrations reported for each station.

5.

A table of tritium concentrations from weekly sampling of stations OS-16, OS-17, and MS-2 for the period of April 2, 1985, to October 8, 1985 Collection of groundwater samples from all the monitoring and observation stations occurs monthly. Weekly collection and analysis of samples from OS-16, 0S-17 and MS-2 began in April 1985 to monitor for tritium activity due to a previous TMI-2 Borated Water Storage Tank (BWST) valve leak.

Tritium concentrations in the monitoring and observation stations remained fairly constant during the reporting period. The results for the reporting period showed normal environmental background tritium concentrations (between 150 and 300 pCi/1) in MS-1, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the EDCB samples. Above background tritium concentrations reported in MS-2, 3, 4, 0S-10, 13, 14, 16, and 17 all were within the range of concentrations recorded since 1980.

The Groundwater Monitoring Report of June 19, 1985, reported that a slight increase in the tritium concentrations of stations OS-16, OS-17, and MS-2 had occurred due to a TMI-2 BWST valve leak. The leak was traced to valve DH-V134A which is located on a common line from the GWST and the Sodium Hydroxide Tank. Repair of the leaking valve was performed under Unit Work Instruction No. 4220-3212-85-E977.

The gamma results for the reporting period show only naturally-occurring K-40 present in OS-13B, OS-16, and OS-17. Concentrations in 0S-138 ranged from 58.2 to 77.9 pCi/1; OS-16 concentrations ranged from 52.3 to 577 pC1/1; and 0S-17 concentrations varied between 98.6 and 182 pCi/1.

Sediment present in the groundwater samples resulted in the detection of K-40.

All other radionuclide concentrations were reported as less than the lower limit of detection (LLD) for the reporting period.

Sr-89 and Sr-90 results for the second quarter of 1985 were LLD for all samples.

Based on the data collected and analyzed to date, no significant radiological safety or health concerns exist relative to the groundwater in the vicinity of TMI-7. at this time.

Sincerely,

\\
