Response

A summary of testing and start-up history is provided as Attachment A. No evidence of test failure for either service water pumps or fire pumps could be found. A summary of the maintenance history of the service water pumps is provided in Attachment B. No record of maintenance on the fire pumps exists. 5. Item Operational problems and major repair efforts.

Response

The service water pumps have had a history of packing and bearing problems since 1975. The packing problems are probably due to the sandy, coarse environment to which the packing is exposed. The bearing problems have almost always been motor thrust bearing problems perhaps due to the heavy load they must bear. The only maintenance that could be considered major was completed on P-7A on 3/18/75 and P-7C on 3/9/77; this maintenance was performed in order to investigate the bearing failures. No significant problems were found on either occasion.

Although the maintenance j summary indicates no work performed during the summary period, it is ] likely that occasional repacking was performed. I 6. Item The longest interval that each pump has been available for operation 4 without corrective maintenance. Identify the number of cycles of operatica during this interval, the duration of each cycle and the operating mode (s) (recirculation, rated flow, etc). Identify the longest continuous operation at or near rated flow conditions for each pump and the status of the pump operability at the end of the run.

P-7A, 6/13/77 - 1/20/78 7 Months P-7B, 12/17/76 - 3/17/78 15 Months P-7C, 3/22/78 - 10/19/78 7 Months The pumps are normally operated in cycles of two weeks on - one week off, with two pumps in operation at or near rated flow (flow, of course, is dependent on lake temperature and heat load) except when the pumps were taken out of service for repairs as indiated in the Maintenance Summary. The pumps were operable at the end of each run. P-9B and P-41 are normally only periodically operated under test conditions. P-9A, however, is run quite often for various uses and has never had an operational problem. REVISION 3 Consumers Power l TEST AND PUMP CAPACITY TEST DATE 11-1-78 4.0 PRECAUTIONS AND LDf1TATIONS 4.1 Testing should be conducted during the warm weather months. j 4.2 Valves operated to shutoff the water flow should be closed slowly to i prevent water hat =er. ? s 5.0 PROCEDURE i ) 5.1 Connect four 2h" hoses from the test header to the playpipes mounted at drain. Measure and record the o.utlet diameter of the playpipes, normally i 1-3/4", on Attachment-1. 5.2 Check all four test header valves closed. All references to test header I { valves are those located outside the Intake Structure. 5.3 Measure and record the approximate distance from the centerline one pump to the surface of the intake bay (suction head). Assume all pumps are about the same. i l 5.4 Place the fire pump selector switches (diesels) and breaker (electric) in the off position. This will prevent inadvertant operation of the fire pumps when the isolation valves are opened. 5.5 Open the mainfold isolation valve corresponding to the pump being tested; 104FP (P-93),105FP (P-9A), or 701FP (P-41). The recommended sequence is P-9A, P-93 and P-41. 5.6 Stop the Jockey Pump at local tiotor controllers. ~ 5.7 Place the selector switch in auto (diesel) or close the breaker (electric) of the fire pump to be tested, i 5.8 Slowly bleed off fire system pressure with drain valve'. Record the auto s, tart pressure on Attachment 1. l 5.9 The sequence of steps 5.10 to 5.16 can be altered at the discression of f the Supervisor. 5.10 Open fully four test header valves and establish a flow. 5.11 If the pump being tested is diesel driven remove the protective cover from the coupling and check the speed.- If necessary, set the speed as close as possible to 1750 RPM at 100% flow (1500 GPM). Record the adjusted 4 speed for Attachment 1. 5.12 With pitot blade inserted to the center of the stream and out a distance approximately y the nozzle tip diameter (3/4" - 1") frem the nozzle end' measure the flowing stream pressure and record on Attachment 1. I 5.18 Close the test header isolation yhlve. 5.19 Repeat Steps 5.5 to 5.18 (excluding 5.6) for the remaining fire pumps. 5.20 Return fire system to normal per Operating Procedure SOP-21 Step 6.1. l 5.21 Remove hoses and replace va,1ve caps as required. 5.22 Return test equipment as required. 6.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA 6.1 Each pump develops at least 1500 gpm at 125 psig. 6.2 Auto starting pressures of pump's verify sequential starting to maintain system pressure > 90 psig. NOTE: For failure to meet the Acceptance Criteria refer to Tech. Spec.
