>p Dr.SCRIPTIO:: OF PROBLE't While performing the_ normal ground checks on 2A RCP motor, a " sero ground" (zero ohna resist.ance) condition was found between both the upper and lover bearing housings and the rotor casing. Inventication of the problem identified the following three items as causes:
Item 1 - The oil spill retainer housing designed by Burns & Roe van solidly resting against the support plate that houses the high pressure oil lif t motors on the upper bearing housing.
Item 2 - 111salignment of and/or foreign material within the material insulating the lower bearing housing from the motor casing.
Item 3 - No insulating material between the flances of the water lines to the lower bearing oil cooler and no insulating =aterial between the water lines and supports holding the water lines to the motor casing (this item is applicable to all four RCP ,
motors at TMI-2).
o STATUS Items 1 and 3 are customer problons. ' Item 1 is being corrected at this time,and the status of Item 3 is unknown. The present conditien of Item 2 has been explained to the Customer by the Allis-Chalmers represent-ntive. Since a resistance reading of 15000 ohms was obtained between the upper bearing housing and-the motor casing, operation of the motor with a grounded lower bearing housing would not be detrimental. ,

FURTHER ACTION RECO:Z:DED BY SITE PE?.SO ::iEL - ..
Have Allis-Chalmers or !!PGD prepare a proce.iure for removal and installation of the lower bec. ring insulation with the motor shaft in place (the Allis .
Chalmers f actory said that this could be done; operating space vill be
. - . critical so this should be verified using our own information ). Also have Allic-Chalmers or NPGD prepare a list of materials necessary for correction of the problem and have the Customer order the sene and have on hand so that a repair can be made at the earliest possible date. -

When I arrived the coupling and hold down bolts had been removed and all mechanical and electrical connections had been removed. The motor wan in the process of being removed because customer is experiencing flexitallic gasket problems with the pump and not for any motor problems.

right on through the a y at the seal box. Oil followed
',hese 3pagettispaget to the junction box. I cut away the varnish impregnated r
?)g. pa lap 6 1ass. cloth and exposed the ends of the 5 spagetti's^. I v' '
harefully sealed around each of the six wires that went into the spagetti with silicone rubber and continued this to include all of the 5 spagetti(
and ended at the conduit with a good mass of silicone rubber to seal oil from getting into the conduit. I had this wrapped with glass tape and varnished. This should take care of this problem. .
I removed the ground strap at the lower insulated bearing and read sero chms. Drained oil from lower bearing and found neoprene seal at the f-f insulated pipe coupling had been removed. Removed Burns and Roe drip 511p sheet metal (drawing attached). Removed mechanism ground from Hi left DC and AC motors. Cleaned mechanical interference between Burns & Roe sheet metal and motor components. Got 7500 ohms. Cleaned insulated bolts and increased this to 1 500 ohms. Motor bearing insulation very crudy and I believe by cleanin they will increase the bearing insulation aesistance.
syeAl@- g j
The 10 hp DC and C nigh lift motors are connected directly to the bearing isolation mount and when they ground the motors as is required by the
- electrical code they ground the bearing. I made up some insulation for the hold down bolts and added insulation under the motor. This will , ,
eliminate grounding the upper bearing insulation. . .
I spent some time explaining to personnel how the upper bearing is insulated and where the insulation is located to iso] ate the bearing. This
- situation of grounding the upper bearing grew over a period of time because the trades probably were not aware of the care that must be adhered to to insure upper bearir.g insulation integrely. .
s.
' Customer believes they can handle the other 3 motors in removing the -
grounds from upper bearings. '

s s DESCRIPTIOli OF PROBLEM While performing the normal ground checks on 2A RCP motor, a "cero ground" (zero ohma recictance) condition was found between both the upper and lower bearing housings and the motor encing. Investigation of the problem identified the following three items as caucea:
Item 1 - The oil spill retainer houcing decigned by Burna & Roe wac solidly resting againct the support plate that houcec the high precoure oil lift motors on the upper bearing housing.
Item 2 - 141calignment of and/or foreign material within the material insulating the lower bearing houcing from the motor casing.
Item 3 - No inculating material between the flangen of the water lines I
to the lower bearing oil cooler and no inculating material between the water linec and supporto holding the water lines !
to the motor cacing (this item in applicable to all four RCP motoro at TMI-2). l l
STATUS Items 1 and 3 are Cuctemer problemc. Item 1 is being corrected at this time,and the statue of ltem 3 in unknown. The present condition of Item 2 has been explained to the Customer by the Allis-Chalmero represent- I ative. Since a resistance reading of 15000 chan wac obtained between ;
the upper bearing houcing and the motor casing, operation of the motor '
with a grounded lower bearing housing would not be detrimental.
Persono contacted - Ron Toole (GPU), Leo Giovanangelo ( Allic-Chalmero) ]
l FURTHER ACTION RECOI:ME"DED BY SITE PERSONNEL Have Allio-Chalmers or NPGD prepare a procedure for removal and inctallation of the lower bearing insulation with the motor chaft in place (the Allic-Chalmers factory said that this could be done; operating crace vill be critical co thic should be verified using our own information ). Also have Allic-Chalmers or HPGD prepare a list of nnterials nececonry for l correction of the problem and have the Cuctamer order the came and have l
