Mr. Richard DeYeung Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. DeYoung:
The staff of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island is gathering facts directly related to the accident itself, but also is interested in background information related to the operation of reactors and releases of radioactive materials.
In particular, the @lloweg (licensed maximum) release of radioactive materials from nuclear oower stations ~has changed (decreased) throughout the east-20-25_
years and the (actual) measured releases have, of course, lluc-Tu""~a~ted but in general decreased as the technology evolved and as more stringent Regulatory (AEC and NRC) requirements have been imposed.
Both sets of data for existing power stations are of interest to the President's Commission.
Please transmit this request to the correct office in the NRC and ask for the data in summary form.
Measured releases may be quoted at a quarterly or an annual rate.
We would appreciate speci.al mention of any occasions during which extraordinary releases of radioactive materials were noticed.
If possible, release magnitudes should be separated by isotopes, e.g. those of Xenon and Iodine.
Unfortunately, the time scale for collection of these data for use by the Commission is short.
We ask that this information be transmitte'd to'this office by the middle of July.
Sincerely,
),
