Dear Sir or Madam:
5 9
TO As we notified you by telephone today, we did not Teceive the NRC Notice of Expiration dated 1 April 1985 for our license SNM-443 until last night.
Because that license expired on 30 June, this letter is an application for a new license to carry the special materials listed in SNM-443.
Because we are requesting only relatively minor changes in our existing license, we choose to pursue the renewal process by means of this letter that states the contemplated modifications.
The changes that we are requesting fall into three categories.
First, there has been a change in laboratory personnel since the last license renewal.
Second, because our nuclear physics laboratory is presently used only as a teaching facility, we are proposing changes in our radiation protection program to make it more suitable for the often irregular schedule of laboratory use.
Finally, we are proposing some changes to enhance internal accountability and record keeping procedures.
Within a few years, the laboratory will also be used for Game research, principally associated with the Cockroft-Walton Accelerator.
At that time we will propose suitable modifications in our radiation u
protection program and apply for license amendments as appropriate.
The following are changes that we wish to make in the license 7, application dated May 21, 1980.

Item 6, Table on Instrument Calibration Discussion of instrument 1 (Nuclear Chicago Survey Meter) should reflect the fact that calibration will now be carried out at VMI by using a 2 point calibration technique with a 1 millicurie Cs-137 source.
Calibration comments for instruments 9, 10, and 11 i
(Dosimeters) should be changed to reflect the fact that the annual calibrations will be carried out at VMI using a CS-137 standard source.
Item 7(a), Replace Dr. James B. Newman by Dr. William C. Sauder.
The person who has prepared this application for renewal and who has been designated as the Radiation Protection Officer is Dr. William C. Sauder of the Department of Physics.
Any correspondence concerning licensing matters should be addressed to him as follows:
Dr. William C. Sauder Department of Physics Virginia Military Institute Lexington, VA 24450 With kind regards,
