Subject:
Byron Station Unit 1 System Leakage Monitoring NRC Docket No. 50-454
Dear Mr. Denton:
This is to provide the initial summary report of the results of our program to monitor and reduce leakage from systems outside of the containment which could be used to transport highly radioactive fluid and gases in a post-accident condition. The enclosed report is being submitted in accordance with a commitment described in Appendix E.77 of the Byron /Braidwood F5AR to satisfy the concern identified in NUREG-0737, Item III.D.1.1.
The total identified leakage from the systems monitored is approximately 1.50 gallons per hour of fluid and approximately 1.0 scfm of gas. This is a conservative estimate due to continuing maintenance efforts to reduce the identified leakage. Details of leakage from individual components are included in the report.
The general leakage criteria to be applied during the first fuel cycle will be to continue to initiate work requests to repair identified leakage and to conduct an ALARA review to determine the urgency of the repair.
One signed original and fifteen copies of this letter and enclosure are provided for NRC review.
Please direct any questions regarding this matter to this office.
Very truly yours,
