Dear Mr. Beach:

Specification 3.3.3.6 of the reference requires that a specified number of accident monitoring instrumentation channels shall be operable. Action c. of specification 3.3.3.6 requires that in the event the minimum number of channels for the wide range noble gas monitor (WRGM) are not operable for greater than 7 days Commonwealth Edison Company (Comed) must submit a Special Report to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission pursuant to Specification 6.9.2 of the reference. On March 3,1997, the 7 days were exceeded. The purpose of this letter is to provide the Special Report detailir.g the cause ofinoperability, the actions taken, and the plans to restore the channel to operable status.

The enclosure addresses an instance of the Braidwood Unit i Auxihary Building Vent Stack Wide Range Gas Monitor being removed for a planned calibration for greater than 7 days. The 7-day Limiting Condition of Operation (LCO) was exceeded at 0759 hours0.00878 days <br />0.211 hours <br />0.00125 weeks <br />2.887995e-4 months <br /> on March 3 during the performance of the Technical Specification required 18-month calibration surveillance.
