Consideration should be given to research related to current issues facing the country.
For example, can excess plutonium from distnantled weapons be used in power reactors or for other uses, what environmental data is needed to break the high level waste disposal deadlock. This issue may be tied to issue #2, since DOE should already be supporting or conducting this research.
