i Subject Byron Unit i 1996 Cold Leg Inspection Results During the exit mocting held on 10/25M5 tur the NRC inspection of the Brandwood Unir i Ste.un Generator tube inspection M. Hohnberg of NRC Region 111 requested that the Byron Uni 1 1996 cold leg inspection results be forwarded to you on 10/28/96. The infonnation requested includes: the number of indicautmx. description and voltages. The results of the in9ection are provided in this letter.

Duc to the increase in the number of Ryron I iTS HL indications observed in the 1995 and 1996 anpections an inspection sample in the cold leg was performed. The scope of the inspection was a folkms:

A 20% intpection in 4 SG's was performed with the same inspection techniques as the hot icg inspection 4 point. 0.115" & U.080" Pancake Coils)

Due so discovery of circumferential indications in SG C, inspection m that steam generator waA cxpanded to IUU'I TTS Inspection Results 2 volumetnc (in I tube) and 3 circumferential indications found in SG C e

The attached table provides n summary of the TTS indicathsns detected and repaired during the Byron Unit 1 TTS CL invection Bau:d upon the site and number of Byron indications the predicted number of Braidwood indication,c.

Comed guidehnes and EPRI guidelines, the decision was made to inspect the Braidwood cold leg during the 1997 refuel outage if the number of indications exceeds C 3 during the midcycle outage.
