Dear Mr. Wadley:
On February 7,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Prairie Island Nuclear

Generating Plant. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within these areas, the
l
inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and representative records,
!
. observations, and interviews with personnel.

Overall, the implementation of radiological controls was effective in maintaining a
reasonable collective dose for the work accomplished during the Unit 2 outage. The
j
inspector observed outage work in progress in the auxiliary and containment buildings and
reviewed radiation protection planning activities associated with the outage. Reviews of
l
shutdown chemistry, the recent abnormal liquid effluent release, and implementation of
!
the respiratory program were also conducted. No violations of NRC requirements or open
j
items were identified.

in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules and Practice," a copy of this letter

and its enclosures will be place in the NRC Public Document Room.
