Dear :

SUBJECT:

TRAINING SESSIONS FOR STATE ACCESS TO CRP DATA SYSTEM A two-day training session for state access to the CRP data base will be offered the week of September 16, 1985, in Columbus, Ohio, for up to two representatives from each crystalline state.

As previously indicated in my July 23, 1985, letter to you regarding state access to the CRP data base, we expect to heve operational by October 1, 1985, a system of computer terminals in each state which will have the capacity of accessing the data base. To refresh your memory, the components of the data base which states can access are:

The Grid Cell (GC) Data Base. This includes the scaled values of the variables used in the region-to-area screening, for all of the individual grid cells, in the three CRP regions.

The RCR Technical Data Base. This permits on-line retrieval of alphanumeric geologic, socioeconomic, and environmental data relating to all three regions of the CRP.

Electronic Mail. This will be utilized to facilitate communications between the CRP and the states.

With this background, the purpose of the two-day training session is to instruct representatives of each state in the use of the system and allow the representatives to obtain hands-on experience with the system. A training manual and other approporiate documentation will be provided. A tentative agenda for the session is attached.

So as to provide adequate instruction attention to all course participants, there will be two, two-day sessions offered, with a maximum of nine states (18 people) at each session. The dates of the sessions will be September 17-18, 1985, and September 19-20, 1985. Reservations for either session will be on a first come, first serve basis.

smLTECT GRID CELL DATA TAFES OFFER

[

As you know, on October.1,1985, crystalline states will have access to

]

the Grid Cell Data Base via computer terminals. This data base contains 1

the scaled values of the variables used in the region-to-area screantne, for all of the grid cells, in the three CRP regions. CEF is also i

i.

offering, to crystalline states, duplicates of that data base os computer i

tapes.

There will be three tapes available to each state. This set of tapes is comprised of one data tape (containing both environmental and geologie data) for each of the three regions. States can request one or all of these three tapes.

The format of the tapes will be discussed at the September training session in Columbus. Generie documentation for these' tapes will also be provided.

It is our desire to facilitate the use of this data. However,. finite resources in meeting our data /information goals limit our availability to adapt the tapes for each individual state. Consequently, we plan'to provide generic d - taties which will have suffiaient detail so that

, f someone with'a data processing backgreemd can eenvert the tapes for their' individual systems. It will be incumbent upon the. states to adapt the tapes to their own system.

i States desiring a copy of~the tapes are requested to costset Dr. Maurice sender, of my staff, by October 1,1985, on (312) 972-3115. We will be !

reproducing and supplying the tapes to the, states on or about October 31, i

1985. Further geestions esacerning the, tiapas or the information access system should be directed to him as well'.
