Dear Mr. Burgas:

Based upon the referenced telecon, the subject material stress relief temperature does not meet the CODE Edition and Addenda (1980 Edition thru W/1981 Addenda), as specified by your Purchase Order. The subject material was induction heat treated, liquid p nched, and induction tempered at 12900F. After tempering was performed the material was cold drawn and induction stress relieved at 1,050 F. Therefore, the stress relief temperature was 2400 below the tempering temperature. The stress relief temperature, as specified by the Purchase Order require-0 ments, should have been "in the range of 25 to 100 below the tempering temperature." Based upon several conversations with the Metallurgy Departments of Lone v.ar Screw Company Vendors, it is believed that the subject material is acceptable if an earlier Edition (i.e., 1974) of ASME Section II could be accepted. This particular Edition does not specify an actual stress relief temperature. In addition, the mechanical properties as certified by the Lone Star Scrcw Company were acceptable to the Edition and Addenda specified. Therefore, please consider)a revision of the CMTR to reflect the 1974 Edition, (i.e., for heat treatment. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience which we may have caused. Page 1 of 2

After tempering was performed, the material was cold drawn and batch stress relieved at 1,0000F, Therefore, the stress relief temperature was 2900 below the tempering temperature. The stress relief temperature, as specified by the Purchase Order require-l ments, could have been either: (a) Tempered at 11000F with no stress relief temperature specified (i.e., 1974 Edition), or, (b) Stress relieved at 11000F minimum (i.e., S/1974 Addenda thru and including W/1977 Addenda); or (c) Stress relieved at 25 to 1000 below the tempering temperature (i.e., S/1978 Addenda) However, the subject material was certified to the 1977 Edition thru S/1978 Addenda.
