Subject:

Auxiliary Feedwater Technical Specifications Gentlemen:

Reference (b) provided the results of the NRC staff's integrated assessment of the Maine Yankee Auxiliary Feedwater system.

In this evaluation, the Staff concluded in part, that the Maine Yankee Technical Specifications should be modified to limit the time that the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump can be out of service to no more than seven days.

In Reference (c), Maine Yankee requested reconsideration of the Staff position since the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump is not required to mitigate any design basis accident. Baced upon further input from the Staff, Maine Yankee has decioed to withdraw without prejudice Reference (c) and to submit proposed technical specification changes limiting the time that the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump may be inoperable in accordance with tne NRC Staff's position in Reference (b). We plan to submit this proposed change by September 6, 1985.

Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions in this matter.
