Dear Mr. Vercasio:

On November 19,1996, Steve Shaffer of this office assisted in the survey performed by your office of the public area adjacent to the former Sylvania Electric Products, Inc.

facility Hicksville, New York. The results of Region I laboratory analysis of the four soil samples collected are provided below. Per your conversation with Steve Shaffer on February 6,1997, the positions of samples A, B, and C are being clarified. This letter replaces our previous transmittal dated January 28,1997, changes from the i original letter are indicated below in bold. Analysis was performed via gamma spectroscopy. The uranium-238 activity is inferred from its daughter protactinium-234m. j SAMPLE A i i

Sample A was collected approximately two and one-half feet from the east side of the fence separating the golf driving range from the properties on Cantiague Rock Road and 15 feet south of the property boundary between Magazine Distributors and Gilbert Displays.

Uranium-238 3.5 i O.7 pCi/g Radium-226 1.0 i 0.4 pCi/g Uranium-235 0.16 i O.03 pCi/g SAMPLE D Sample D was collected on the East side of the golf driving range just outside the east fence of the golf driving range, approximately 200 meters due east of the location of the other samples. This sample was intended to be representative of the background concentrations of radioactive materialin the vicinity of the former Sylvania property.
