Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Appendix R - Fire Protection Gentlemen:
Appendix R, Item III.J of 10CFR50 requires emergency lighting units with at least an 8-hour battery power supply be provided in all areas needed for operation of safe shutdown equipment and in associated access and egress routes.
Sealed beam emergency lighting units were installed in the access and egress routes to equipment that is required to be locally operated during hot shutdown.
Emergency lighting units were also installed in the control room, emergency switchgear rooms, and in the area of the alternate safe shutdown panel.
A total of 86 battery units with multiple spotlights (normally 2 lights per battery unit) have already been installed throughout the plant to accommodate the Appendix R alternate safe shutdown procedure.
As identified in our letter of June 6, 1985, we are in the process of installing seven (7) additional emergency lighting units due to the recent changes in our alternate shutdown procedure for local manual operation of equipment to address the potential for fire-induced spurious operation and the associated circuits concerns outlined in Generic Letter 85-01.
Installation of these additional emergency lighting units cannot be completed by September 14, 1985 as previously stated in our letter due to material delivery and limitations in resources available to complete installation. We expect to have all the units installed by the end of October 1985.
In the interim, we have placed additional portable hand-held lights for brigade personnel usage to supplement these specific areas where additional lighting units are being installed.
