REGISTRY OF RRDIDACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES

, SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE '

(AMENDED PAGE 9 - NOVEMBER 5, 1996)

HQ : NR-0628-D-118-S DATE: June 29, 1994 PAGE 9 OF 10

$ DEVICE TYPE: Radiographic Exposure Device LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE (cont.)*

  • REVIEWER NOTE: If authorizing a licensee to perform-i maintenance, note that at one point in the the maintenance a section procedures in the Amersham users manual, the source is held in place by only the locking mechanism. If the locking mechanism should work incorrectly or fail , the source could possibly be removed from the device. Licensee's program should be reviewed to ensure that they have adequate training and procedures to perform this maintenance ,

procedure. 1 SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Based on the review of the design information and prototype test data contained in the references cited below, we continue to conclude that the Model 865 Radiographic Exposure Device utilizing the Model 86520 Source Assembly in conjunction with the Model 86550 Pneumatic Control Unit is acceptable for specific licensing purposes. The test data confirm that the Model 865 device will contain the Iridium-192 under conditions of use normally encountered in industrial radiographic operations, including underwater and underwater habitat applications; and also, accident conditions incident to use and transportation. However, due to the inherent potential hazards associated with this type of device, it should be used by persons who are qualified radiographers that are licensed by the NRC or Agreement States.

I Fu-thermore, the licensing authority should require licensees to develop and use appropriate standard operating procedures to prevent misuse and to safely handle the device in the event it is involved in fire, explosion, or other type emergencies which might result in partial or total loss of conta1 ament.

Therefore, we continue to conclude that the Model 865 would be expected to maintain its integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified l in this certificate. 1
