SUBJECT:
NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-301/96014(DRS)
Dear Mr. Patulski:
On January 9,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Point Beach Nuclear Plant,
Unit 2. The focus of this inspection was your steam generator replacement (SGRP)
activities. At the conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with those
members of your staff identified in the enclosed report.
During this inspection, inspectors noted a relatively large number of engineering and
quality assurance hold points throughout the SGRP work packages, which indimed a good
preplanned oversight effort for the SGRP activities. However, misalignments of
connecting feedwater and mainsteam piping, which required emergent system
modifications to correct, indicated that engineering staff preplanning efforts associated
with steam generator installation alignments were not fully affective. Overall, the
inspectors concluded that the welding and nondestructive examinations activities observed
associated with the steam generator replacement met tha American Society of Mechanical
Engineers Code requirements.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of this letter
and the enc losed inspection report will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
