SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 95-03, CIRCUMFERENTIAL CRACKING OF STEAM GENERATOR TUBES (TAC NOS. M92233 AND M92234)

Dear Mr. Terry:

1 On April 28, 1995, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter 95-03, "Circumferential Cracking of Steam Generator Tubes." By letters dated June 27, 1995, and January 18, 1996, you provided information in response to the generic letter (GL) and to an NRC request for additional information (RAI).

The staff is currently in the process of documenting its review of GL 95-03 responses. During this process, the staff identified one additional question that had been asked of other plants with similarly designed steam generators as at Comanche Peak, Units 1 and 2, but had not been forwarded to you.

The staff requests, therefore, that you respond to the following question recognizing that the future inspections referenced in your original GL 95-03 response may already be complete:

Several plants with preheater model steam generators expanded tubes into the tube support plate in the preheater region to minimize the potential for vibration induced wear.

Since these expansions contain similarities to other expanded regions which have experienced circumferential cracking, discuss whether or not this area is susceptible to circumferential cracking.

If this area is susceptible to circumferential cracking, please submit the information requested in GL 95-03 per the guidance contained in the GL.

1 We request your response to our RAI within 30 days of receipt of this letter.

If you have any questions, please call me at (301) 415-1038.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
