Subject:
Maine Yankee Licensing Basis for Environmental Qualification in the Turbine Building Gentlemen:
Reference (b) indicated that we would transmit the results of our analyses of the High Energy Line Break ' i the Turbine Building, assuming the " winter ventilation configuration", by October 18, 1996. In phone conversations with the Residents' office and with the Project Manager, Mr. D.
i Dorman on October 18th, we indicated that additional time was required to complete this analysis.
Subsequently on November 1,1996, we informed Mr. Yerokun and Mr. Dorman that we plan to submit the results of the analyses by November 15,1996.
L The delay is in part due to the expansion of the scope of the Feedwater Line break analysis. The original assessment of feedwater line breaks performed in response to GL 79-01B assumed a rupture ofone of the 18" main feedwater lines. We have now examined the rupture of the 27" discharge of the steam driven feedwater pump (P-2C). This rupture is not limiting. However by redefining the l
location of the " rupture of the largest line", we have increased the scope of the analysis associated l
with slot breaks of smaller feedwater lines. The analytical work is both more extensive and more rigorous than was performed in response to GL 79-OlB and we believe will better meet the expectations of your technical staff.
LER 96-004, Reference (c) committed to provide additional information on the same issue by October 1,1996. The follow-up LER has been delayed for the same reasons discussed above. We plan to submit the follow-up LER by December 1,1996. This delay was also discussed with the l
Resident's office.
i Very truly yours, m &.h bmes R. Hebert, Manager Licensing & Engineering Support Department g
