NRC EXTENDS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD ON AGENCY'S STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT OF REGULATORY ACTIVITIES The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the period for public comment on the agency's strategic assessment initiative until December 2.

The Commission decided to extend the comment period after receiving several requests for more time to adequately address the two dozen direction-setting issues resulting from the assessment. The issue papers were published for comment in mid-September.

The strategic assessment, initiated a year ago by Chairman Shirley Ann Jackson, is a critical self-evaluation and rebaselining intended to provide a sound foundation for the agency's direction and decision-making for the rest of this decade and into the next.

Last month, two public meetings were held -- in Washington, D.C. and Colorado Springs. C0. A third meeting is currently being held in the outskirts of Chicago, IL.
