Dr. Shirley Jackson, Chairwoman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Jay Janney 121 Town Hall Rd.

Edgecomb, ME 04556

Dear Dr. Jackson,

12/31/96 I am writing to you to express genuine concern regarding the extent of actual safety at the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station. Apparent violations of Federal Law, confusion over compliance expectations, I

and deeply conflicting assessments of technical data by knowledgeable persons do very little to abate this concern.

This is particularly troublesome in light of the managerial track record of one the plant's owners, Northeast Utilities.

i Please do not allow what is now clearly a

dangerous and embarrassing situation at best to develop into a horrible tragedy.

Do not allow Maine Yankee to generate power until it is in complete compliance wi th NRC regulations.

Thank you for your time, Dr.

Jackson.

Sincerely,

\\
