- AGREEMENT AND NON-AGREEMENT STATES NOTICE OF UPCOMING NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) PUBLIC MEETINGS (SP-97-007)

~

Enclosed for your information are two Federal Register notices which announce upcoming NRC public meetings on subjects which may be of interest. The first notice announces a public meeting scheduled for February 21,1997 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in which the NRC will receive presentations by representatives from the nuclear industry on the use of mixed oxide (MOX) fuelin nuclear reactors. On January 14,1997, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a Record of Decision on the Storage and Disposition of Weapons-Usable Fissile Materials. One of DOE's approaches to dispose of the surplus plutonium is to burn it as MOX fuel in existing domestic commercial reactors. The Nuclear Energy Institute has requested an opportunity to present information on the use of MOX fuelin light water reactors to the NRC staff. A preliminary meeting agenda is included in the enclosed notice.

The second notice announces a public meeting regarding the DOE proposal for production of tritium in commerciallight-water reactors. This meeting is to provide an opportunity for public comment on the technicalissues regarding the DOE proposal and to ensure that the public is aware of the NRC staff's review activities early in the proposal evaluation process. This meeting is scheduler' February 25,1997 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Both meetings will be held in the NRC Auditorium located in the Two White Flint North building at 11545 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland.

(SP-97-007)

Enclosed for your information are two Federal Renister notices which announce upcoming NRC public meetings on subjects which may be of interest. The first notice announces a i

i public meeting scheduled for February 21,1997 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in which the j

NRC will receive presentations by representatives from the nuclear industry on the use of i

mixed oxide (MOX) fuel in nuclear reactors. On January 14,1997, the Department of j

Energy (DOE) issued a Record of Decision on the Storage and Disposition of Weapons-j Usable Fissile Materials. One of DOE's approaches to dispose of the surplus plutonium is j

to burn it as MOX fuelin existing domestic commercial reactors. The Nuclear Energy i

institute has requested an opportunity to present information on the use of MOX fuelin j

light water reactors to the NRC staff. A preliminary meeting agenda is included in the enclosed notice.

l The second notice announces a public meeting regarding the DOE proposal for production of tritium in commerciallight-water reactors. This meeting is to provide an opportunity for j

public comment on the technicalissues regarding the DOE proposal and to ensure that the public is aware of the NRC staff's review activities early in the proposal evaluation j

process. This meeting is scheduled for February 25,1997 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

i Both meetings will be held in the NRC Auditorium located in the Two White Flint North building at 11545 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland.
