1 50320-850814 August 14, 1985 NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-TMI-85-07 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

Facility: GPU Nuclear Corporation Licensee Emergency Classification:

Three Mile Island, Unit 2 X Not Applicable Docket Number 50-320

Subject:

WATER SPILL DURING DWCS TEST At 11:25 AM on August 14, 1985, a hose connection on a test rig in the reactor building failed spilling an estimated 3,000 gallons of water. The spill occurred during a test of a portion of the Defueling Water Cleanup System (DWCS).

The DWCS will be used during the TMI-2 defueling to control radioactivity levels in the reactor vessel, fuel transfer canal, (FTC) and spent fuel pool. The test rig which is not a permanent part of the system was being used to check the flow capacity of the DWCS. During the test, two hose clamps failed allowing a hose to separate from a valve flange. The water spilled and drained to the reactor building sump. The source of the cater was the fuel transfer canal (FTC). The FTC level decreased by about 10 inches as a result of the spill.

No environmental releases or increases in reactor building radiation levels have been observed. The fuel transfer canal water level was restored by transferring water from the borated water storage tank.

Media interest has occurred, and the licensee has issued a press release. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was informed. The NRC does not plan to issue a press release but is responding to media inquiries.

This information is current as of 4:00 PM, August 14, 1985.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only, and the NRC plans to continue its review of this event.
