Revision of Commitment: Maintenance Protocol for GE Type SBM Control Switches, Cooper Nuclear Station, NRC Docket 50-298, DPR-46

Letter to L. J. Callan from G. H. Horn dated August 8,1994, " Response to Request for AdditionalInformation" Gentlemen:

The Nebraska Public Power District (District) committed to establish a replacement protocol for i

safety related GE Type SBM switches which had not yet been refurbished or replaced, as discussed in Reference 1. Subsequently, the District established a protocol for the replacement / refurbishment of GE Type SBM control switches with a Lexan cam follower manufactured prior to January 1976, during the 1995 and 1997 refueling outages.

In accordance with the established protocol, approximately 45% of the safety related GE Type SBM switches which met this criteria were replaced or refurbished during the 1995 refueling outage. The results of the maintenance indicated that no functional switch failures were found.

One switch was found with parts that were actually cracked or broken, but the functionality of the switch remained unaffected. Based on these results, the District has re-evaluated the existing maintenance protocol which calls for the replacement or refurbishment of the remaining safety related GE Type SBM switches during the 1997 refueling outage. Specifically, the District will 1

perform maintenance on 10% of the remaining switches each refueling outage, with sample expansion should functional switch failures be found in the initial 10% sample, f
