Dear Mr. Kregloe:
This confirms our earlier report of an oil spill at our North Anna Power Station.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on August 6, 1985, Station personnel discovered a small amount of oil in the cooling water discharge canal.
Most of the oil was contained by the permanent boom in i
the discharge canal; however, some oil escaped from behind the boom due to wind and wave action.
Another boom was installed downstream of the permanent boom.
Absorbent pads were used to remove the oil from the discharge canal.
The cause of the spill has not been definitely determined.
The turbine building sump was discharged just prior to the discovery of the oil.
However, the oil separator was checked and appeared to be operating properly.
Also, fire protection personnel drained a fire hose into the storm drain at approximately the same time which may have washed oil out of the catch basin in the storm drain.
As a precautionary measure, absorbent pads were placed in the catch basin.
