TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST DATED APRIL 7, 1995, ADVANCED l-MEDICAL SYSTEMS, INC.

j This is in response to your technical assistance request (TAR) dated April 7, j
1995, regarding an amendment request from Advanced Medical Systems, Inc.
l (AMS)..In the TAR, you requested assistance in responding to two requests by AMS, installation and operation of a water sampling device in a new sanitary l.
sewer manhole / lateral system and reconnection of the facility underdrain system to the new manhole / lateral.
i Based on our review of the license amendment request, we have no objection to AMS installing the sampling system in the new la eral connection between the 1
AMS facility and the NE0RSD's London Road Interce, tor. However, AMS should be j
l infonned that the analysis of this sample may not be used to show compliance with 10 CFR 20.2003 since samples will be taken after the release has taken i
place.
It may however, be used to confirm results of analysis that are j
performed prior to release.
4 With regards to the second issue, AMS has requested authorization to reconnect the new foundation underdrain system to the new manhole and lateral after 3000 i
gallons of " clean" water has passed through the underdrain system. We are not j
confident that this volume of water will conclusively show that future i
discharges to the sanitary sewer system will meet the Part 20 limits. We are concerned that contamination may migrate from areas outside of the area that is being decontaminated as part of the installation of the new underdrain system. Authorization to reconnect the underdrain system to the new manhole i
and lateral is contingent on the licensee successfully demonstrating that the soil under the building and in the area surrounding the new underdrain system i
does not contain residual radioactive material contamination that could enter into the system in excess of NRC criteria, i
