CHAIRMAN The Honorable Edward Markey, Chairman Subcommittee on Energy Conservation and Power Comittee on Energy and Comerce United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Mr. Chairman:
Thank you for your letter, dated July 22, 1985, inviting the Commission to appear at a Subcommittee hearing on July 31, 1985 concerning the security of nuclear power reactors in the United States.
Your letter specifically requested the presence of NRC Executive Director for Operations, Mr. William Dircks, and the Director of the Division of Safeguards, Mr. Robert Burnett, at the hearing. Regrettably, neither Mr.
Burnett nor his immediate supervisor, Mr. John Davis, Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, will be available to brief the Subcommittee on July 31. Mr. Burnett will be away from Washington to attend the wedding of his son on the West Coast; Mr. Davis is scheduled to speak at a Nuclear Waste Management Conference in Chicago.
Mr. Dircks is scheduled to be on leave on July 31, 1985.
Since Mr. Burnett and Mr. Davis are the NRC staff persons with lead responsibility for addressing the issues raised in your letter of invitation, the Commission would greatly prefer to meet with the Subcommittee to discuss these important issues at a time when either or both would be available. Accordingly, we respectfully request that the Commission's appearance be postponed to a mutually agreeable date when the cognizant NRC staff would also be available to participate.
Sincerely.
