Subject:

Reactor Trip Breaker Testing and Maintenance Gentlemen:

In Reference (d), the NRC Staff transmitted to Maine Yankee a Safety Evaluation of our Testing and Maintenance Program for our Reactor Trip Breakers. In that letter, you noted that the NRC guidance recommends testing and maintenance at six-month intervals and that presently Maine Yankee is engaged in a quarterly testing maintenance program.

In both References (b) and (c), Maine Yankee indicated that we would reevaluate the frequency of our testing and maintenance on the reactor trip breakers based upon our experience during the Cycle 8 operation. The trip breakers have performed well, as expected, and we have altered our testing and maintenance program commencing with the Cycle 9 startup as follows:

We will continue to perform preventive maintenance and time testing as previously outlined on all reactor trip breakers prior to startup from a refueling outage.

We will conduct undervoltage device time testing on a semi-annual basis during Cycle 9 and following, prior to any preventive maintenance or intentional cycling of the trip breakers.

We will conduct preventive maintenance on a semi-annual basis as 05g conditioned in the item above.

Uriited States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page Two Attention: Dr. Thomas E. Murely, Regional Adninistrator 7N-85-166 We believe that this modification of our Maintenance and Testing Program is consistent with the NRC Staff guidance, good engineering, and prudent management. As the data base develops for refurbished breakers lubricated

-with Mobil 28, it may be appropriate to once again evaluate the preventive maintenance interval at the end of the upcoming fuel cycle.

If you have additional questions of this matter, please feel free to

-contact us.

Very truly yours, PMINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER C0f4'ANY J W.
